She Carries the Fire: Songs of Survival, Freedom, and Resilience
On Pride weekend, join us for She Carries the Fire, an intimate concert in support of Rising Waters Collective's inaugural Currents Festival, hosted at one of Seattle's most exciting cultural spaces: ArtLove Salon, perched above Pike Place Market with sweeping views of Elliott Bay.
The evening features a preview of Sheila Silver's Songs of Resilience, stirring traditional Catalan and Spanish songs of resistance, powerful art songs celebrating love and Black joy, and a shockingly resonant aria from Menotti's 1950 Pulitzer-winning opera The Consul.
We will also present excerpts from two poignant works exploring historical injustice: An American Dream, an opera highlighting the effects of displacement and prejudice in the Puget Sound region during WWII, and Jake Heggie’s For a Look or a Touch, a dramatic song cycle about two gay teenagers torn apart by the Holocaust.
