The Human Voice: Where Isolation Meets the Illusion of Connection

A reimagining of Poulenc and Cocteau's La voix humaine as a multi-location, multi-interpretation experience.

1 day, 8 performers, 8 unique interpretations of the opera in different venues across the region, offering varied artistic perspectives on the same work.

This decentralized approach transforms the piece into a dynamic, citywide event, deepening audience engagement and emphasizing the universal yet deeply personal nature of the opera's themes.

Some experiences transcend cultures and societies, yet each individual's encounter with them is uniquely their own. By presenting the same script and music in multiple locations on the same day, Rising Waters Collective creates space for artists and audiences to reflect on interpersonal relationships, intimate partner violence, mental health struggles, and the complex role of technology in communications through varied interpretations and perspectives.

According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men experience Intimate Partner Violence (physical, sexual, psychological and/or economic) in their lifetime. In the United States, over 16 million people suffer from IPV abuse every year. Additionally, the Washington State Department of Health reports that 41% of women and 32% of men in the state have experienced domestic violence in their lifetimes.

Stay tuned for a full schedule of times, venues, and artists.
